| Tocantins Survivor: Season 18 Filming Location Info
Geography/Location Located in the heartland of Brazil, the State of Tocantins, borders the states of Bahia, Maranhão and Piauí, in the North region; it has one of the smallest population rate in the country. On the west side of the recently formed Tocantins state, with an area of 34,113 km2, is a transition area between the "caatinga" (a dry, stunted brushwood area) and the "cerrado" (a woodsy pasture). Known as the "Jalapão desert", it is in fact a great oasis since, in spite of its sandy soil, this mountainous region has springs and rivers that on their way down to the Tocantins River valley, form beautiful waterfalls and rapids, besides providing the environment for a diversified fauna and flora. The closest airport is on Palmas city, capital of Tocantins State.
Tocantins forms the boundary between the Amazon Rainforest and the coastal savanna. As a result, the state's geography is varied. Many rivers cross through the state (including one of the same name), and there are over 20 archaeologically significant sites found in Tocantins.
Climate The climate is tropical; temperatures vary between 30 to 35 degrees Celsius during the day and 13 to 20 degrees at night. There is a rainy season between December and March and a dry season, with scattered storms, the rest of the year.
Wildlife Onça Pintada ( jaguar); Onça Suçuarana or Sussuarana ( panther or puma); Lobo Guará ( manned wolf); Raposa (fox); Cachorro do Mato (Bush Dog or Wild Dog); Emu; Sucuri (anaconda), Toucans, Macaws, and Parrots. There is also the critically endangered Pato de Penacho (Brazilian Merganser) and some registered sights of the Ararinha Azul (Spix's Macaw), which is considered already extinct in Nature.
Culture/Production Themes Seven indigenous ethnic groups present in Tocantins and the Quilombolas complete the cultural beauty of the state, with their ways of life, dances and rituals that are eternalized through generationsImages of Tocantins Survivor: Tocantins was produced in 2008 and will premiere on February 12, 2009. For this season, the minimum age requirement has been lowered to 18 in most states. This season will return to the nation of Brazil, but a different part than that used for Survivor: The Amazon.
